Story
“This hat is named after my grandma, Mama. Mama is not just my grandma but my dearest friend. We have always had a close bond. Growing up we bonded over girlhood, as the family majority was boys. As a young girl Mama always was around and she always is around for me today too. And I mean always! We spent at least 3 days a week together ad a child as she would help get me to hockey training, games, and sporting events which is where our closeness really just breached familial bond and became a dear friendship. On weekends she would always look after me and my brothers, embracing our play, our imagination, time playing instruments and time playing in the secret garden. She always taught me things, like how to sow. She always gave her time up to help me like when she came to my class in year 6 to help sow a blanket for the homeless from my entire class. So many memories! Now Mama … she is like no other, she is indescribable. To even just put her description into words is like trying to draw a soul. It’s just an understanding. She is strong, growing up from a very young age she always helped others, and this never stopped. Mama has undoubtedly put her families life’s above hers every time, making sacrifices of time and commitment for those she loves. Mama is kind. She always has open ears, and more than that she always just gets it. No matter what the sticky situation is, when tainted with emotion Mama always has an open door, an open heart, open ears and open arms. Mama is fun. She has a way of bringing the colour yellow across all steps she walks, and in all eyes she meets. She turns the sad into a story of fortune, she turns the chaos into laughter, she genuinely makes me smile endlessly. She has the warmth of an angel, that whenever you see her you leave feeling like you’ve just been blessed, her presence genuinely heels my soul, making an empty cup overflow with an abundance of appreciation, love and connection. My Mama is not like anyone else’s grandma, and she’s more than anyone else’s closest friend, my Mama is my soul mate. My conscience and commitment, my eagerness to teach, my goal to keep peace, my desire to help others, it’s all from Mama. From listening to her stories, hearing her talk about my Poppy, laughing about my over reliance on her organisation as a child, hearing her perfect words of wisdom, always hearing encouragement no matter what, and to never hearing her say a single bad word about any person in the existence of humanity… not even once. My mama is an icon, an inspiration and my hero. What a gift this relationship is.
Now when I see this pattern it reminds me of Burberry and something about mama is that she always dresses nice. Just like my mum, mama has an impeccable sense of fashion. She always said something like “what’s the point of dressing down?” And “whats the point of having something if you don’t wear it.” So with that in mind this pattern reminds me of a scarf, an umbrella and a bag which reminds me of countless things… as a child we were running to the shops and we got drenched in the rain. Mama looked at me and said “what do I look like” in misery of us both looking like drowned rats, my youth and innocence replied “my grandma”. We laughed and laughed. I am sure she was wearing a scarf that day.
Not to mention Mama has quite the talent for dress making and sewing. She is always fixing up things, making us library bags, presents for others, and whatever we wanted. Taking up hems of my brothers op shop finds and always sewing so perfectly. So it goes without saying that if Digress is about naming significant memories, there absolutely must be a Mama Cap.”
