Story
“It’s crazy how you are led to believe one thing looks a certain way, but then on arrival it is everything but that. That happened to me when I went to Milan, although this time, Venice is closer to what I expected than not. The walkways were broader than I thought they would be, and it was very busy, I also never expected little markets like those you would see in Bali. But much of the ideas I had were there. It started when I looked out the window of the train, I wondered how much of the surrounding water was once land. Walking through alley ways, across small bridges, watching people watching. There were people everywhere paying to see and spend time viewing history… churches, buildings, bridges. At one point I stood on a busy bridge covered in people, I heard a man yelling “pictures” as I looked at two bridges ahead, I wondered what part was the bridge of sighs, and then it clicked. I heard a man explain to someone else that they were with “that was the court, and that bridge led people to prison.” As I looked upon the bridge of sighs I wondered really what such a place looked like before. I imagined prisoners walking through the little bridge ahead, peaking through the ion bars, one last look of reality and light.. momentarily, I hope.
I stood looking at a busy area, hundreds of people waiting to see an old church, magical really. I then said, “Imagine what this looked like then… 1000 years ago, no people around other than the people who were here doing whatever they did at that time.” I was even trying to fathom this, in doing so, I considered the oldest people I know, in my mind I imagined the oldest people they knew, and so far, my mind still cannot comprehend how long ago these structures were created. But isn’t that history? Something we need to treasure… something we are forever making. I hope that in time we have, and whoever comes after us has a beautiful history to seek, learn about and treasure.”
